Professional Development for Teachers

The Professional Development for Teachers program in the Graduate School of Education being offered in early 2007 provides a variety of high-quality, online professional development opportunities for practicing K–12 teachers with a consistent classroom/group of students.

Each course incorporates sustained job-embedded exercises and follow-up activities to positively impact teaching methods and behavior, provide instruction for candidates to master subject competencies, and create pedagogical experiences that focus on raising student achievement.

Participants meet online as teams to collaborate, examine data on student performance, study content embedded in standards, and implement research-based instructional strategies to improve their individual performances as educators. Teachers in the program continually reflect on their skills and practices while determining how their course experiences are producing desired results for their students.

Candidates may take 2 to 10 credits during a 6-week term. Course combinations are titled as individual degree plans. Courses can be selected to take individually, in a series, or with other professional development offerings

Who Should Take This Program?

Professional Development for Teachers courses are for practicing K–12 teachers who teach a classroom or group of students and wish to master subject competencies and create pedagogical experiences that focus on raising student achievement. The program is also appropriate for such K–12 teachers who may decide to transfer preapproved course credits toward Kaplan University’s Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning degree program.

The National Staff Development Council’s goal states “all teachers in all schools will experience high-quality professional learning as part of their daily work by 2007.”

Toward that goal, the No Child Left Behind act requires all public school teachers of core academic subjects to be “highly qualified” in their field(s). The Professional Development for Teachers program may help support this competency requirement and, more importantly, provides engaging and valuable experiences for teachers who want to make a positive impact on student achievement.
