Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice


Kaplan University offers seven emphasis areas in the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program: Forensic Psychology, Law Enforcement, Private Security, Fraud Examination and Investigation, Corrections, Crime Analysis, and Crime Scene Investigation.


Forensic Psychology Emphasis:


Learn the value of psychology within the context of the criminal justice system. In this program you will enhance your ability to identify and interact with mentally ill individuals, intervene in crisis situations, and understand the impact of crime on its victims and the community. As a graduate, you may qualify for advanced positions within police departments and law enforcement agencies, as well as opportunities in social services and the judicial system.

Law Enforcement Emphasis:


Prepare to start or advance a career in a police department or criminal investigations. Examine the roles, responsibilities, issues, and trends related to contemporary law enforcement organizations. This emphasis area also explores evidence and proof. Learn about trial proceedings, constitutional concepts, and criminal case law. As a graduate you may qualify for advanced positions within police departments and other law enforcement agencies.

Private Security Emphasis:


Learn techniques behind search, seizure, and discovery to help start or advance a career in security with companies, computer firms, retail stores, and schools. This emphasis area concentrates on collecting evidence and investigation. As a graduate you may qualify for employment in private security agencies, law firms, and corporate investigation departments.

Fraud Examination and Investigation Emphasis:


Learn the skills and techniques essential to working as a fraud examiner. This emphasis area is designed to prepare you to sit for examination with professional organizations to become a Certified Fraud Examiner. With this credential, you'll be more employable in niche law enforcement areas such as white collar crime and financial investigation.

Corrections Emphasis:


Learn the administrative and operational aspects of the U.S. correctional system, both institutional and community based. Confront issues such as overcrowding, inmate rights, and juvenile justice. As a graduate you may qualify to pursue opportunities at local, state, and federal jail facilities and juvenile detention centers in administrative, tactical, and managerial roles.

Crime Analysis Emphasis:


Learn about the practices and tools used to analyze and measure crime and explore the processes of psychological profiling, crime mapping, and intelligence gathering. This emphasis area focuses on the skills and techniques essential to crime analysis. As a graduate you may qualify for a crime analyst position in a law enforcement organization.

Crime Scene Investigation Emphasis:


Learn techniques of locating, collecting, and analyzing crime scene evidence used in courts of law. Identify boundaries of a crime scene and understand the principles of searching the crime scene for specific types of evidence, identifiable forensic material, and other items of evidentiary value. As a graduate, you may qualify for a crime investigation position in a law enforcement organization.
