Associate's (AABA) - Visual Communication


The AIU Online Associate of Arts in Business Administration degree features a concentration in Visual Communication. The AABA with a concentration in Visual Communication degree combines the business skills from the University's AABA degree program with specific skills needed for career opportunities in the creatively diverse field of visual communication.

At the completion of this program, successful students may pursue such careers as: Graphic Design Assistant, Advertising Specialist, Community Arts Development Associate, Gallery Assistant and many other creative careers.
The courses required to complete the AABA degree with a concentration in Visual Communication include:
  • Visual Literacy
    Elements of design are introduced through the exploration of various techniques. Students will closely examine the principles of color theory. Topics include line, form, texture, color, balance, scale, and proportion as they apply to working and finished design projects.

  • Research and Design Solutions
    In this course, students will explore the creative thinking process as it is applied to a project and examine strategies to develop effective research methods. Students will investigate methods of visual problem solving through effective research. The process of collaboration will be utilized as an introduction to working as part of a design team.

  • Business Skills for Visual Communication
    This course explores the business and project management skills needed in the visual communication field. It introduces students to invoices, contracts, and legal issues. The class will also explore career and job opportunities available in the field.

  • Business and Society
    A general introduction to business activity and how it relates to our economic society. Students will explore how businesses are owned, organized, managed and controlled.

  • Fundamentals of Marketing
    Students will study and apply the fundamentals of marketing within an organization and the contemporary market environment.

  • English Composition
    In this course, students focus on developing writing skills through practice and revision of a variety of types of essays.

  • Computer Applications
    A practical overview of desktop applications including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

  • Contemporary Mathematics
    Addresses topics in contemporary mathematics such as inequalities, radicals, quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and sequence and series.

  • International Business
    Includes topics related to global business operations and planning, such as investment issues, technology impact, competition, cultural diversity, and legal issues.

  • Art Appreciation
    This course introduces a variety of art forms within a cultural context, providing a basis of understanding of societal and cultural developments in historic and contemporary terms.

  • Personal Finance Concepts
    Topics will include financial goals, budgeting, income taxes, personal credit, savings and investment, home ownership, insurance and retirement.

  • Aspects of Psychology
    This course examines the discipline of psychology, both cognitive and psychosocial, covering topics such as perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, personality, attitudes, psychological aspects of human sexuality, and psycho-behavioral pathology.

  • Introduction to Accounting
    Introduces students to financial accounting. Students will learn the fundamentals of the accounting cycle.

  • Business Presentations
    This course focuses on preparing and delivering effective business presentations. In addition students learn about presentation strategy and the creation of visual aids.

  • Business Ethics
    The course examines ethical business practices, the force of technology on ethical decision-making, and issues and problems impacting individuals and corporations.

  • Business Management and Leadership
    Examines the elements of management and leadership as they apply to modern organizations. Special emphasis is placed on information and communication technologies found in today's management environment.

  • Project Management
    In this course, students learn how to plan and manage projects. The coursework offers students a hands-on opportunity to practice planning and communication skills through teamwork to achieve project goals.
